This is now happening on the Internet, and people are encouraging and funding these causes, be their company or individual projects all the time.

I’m sure you’ve participated in crowdfunding at one time or another because there are all kinds of crowdfunded issues. Think about the Haiti earthquake and all the people that donated to that cause. That was crowdfunding in action. But there are so many other examples, like political campaigns, and artistic pursuits of all kinds. This concept has been around for a very long time.
